Specialist shops are in Caldas (15 km). The very long and sandy beaches on the Atlantic coast are very attractive and also nearby. Fresh fruit, vegetables, fish, eggs and bred are offered on the daily market which is close to your accommodation.Leisure time Sao Martinho:You find many tourist attractions of Portugal in the near of Sao Martinho. This town has kept its charm. The hilly and green hinterland invites you to extended hikes and sight-seeing. Possibilities for fishing, riding and playing tennis are in this place or nearby. A golf course is about 35 km away, near "Praia del Rei" (in the near of Obidos). The magic forest of Bucaco with over 700 different kinds of trees. Coimbra is one of the oldest university towns of Europe. The monastery Batalha is probably the most important national monument of the country. The worldwide known places of pilgrimage, Fatima and Tomar, where once had been the headquarters of the Christian order of knights which pressed ahead the overseas discovery. The mediaeval castle Obidos and the very worthwhile "Zisterzienserkloster" (special kind of monastery) Alcobaca. Everything is near by hand.History of the place Sao Martinho:It belonged to the lands which had been given from the former king to the monks of Alcobaca in the 13th century. Until the 18th century there was a shipyard (you can still see the ruins on the other side of the bay) where many of the boots for the discoveries had been built. Meanwhile, the monks had changed the fertile ground into huge fruit and vegetable plantations. They brought the produce here, from where it had been shipped to Lisbon and other places. The aristocracy and prosperous citizens of the country realized very soon the charm of the bay and built their elegant accommodations in the 19th century. You can still see many of them today.
